The Kilbride Suite of Kilkenny’s Ormonde Hotel was full to capacity on Friday night as Ormonde College of Further Education staged its annual awards conferring ceremony. Staff, award recipients and their relatives gathered to enjoy the occasion as over 250 individual awards were conferred on successful learners. The role of Master of Ceremonies was fulfilled by staff member Margie Wall and there was a palpable atmosphere of celebration as former students were conferred with the fruit of their labours and became reacquainted with classmates and tutors.
Guests of Honour included chairperson of Co. Kilkenny VEC Cllr. Mary Hilda Cavanagh and Chairperson of the Board of Management Cllr. Marie Fitzpatrick, Kilkenny Senior Hurling team captain and current all-star holder Brian Hogan who brought Liam McCarthy along with him when presenting the awards to the Sport and Recreation award recipients. The standing of the college in the community was also reflected by the fact that awards were presented by Mr. Tony Coy of the Kilkenny branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association and Mr. P.J. Carter from C & C Security who made the official presentation to the students of the Security Studies programme.

Students of the Beauty Therapy programme at Ormonde College of FE can be forgiven for being slightly awestruck at the commencement of their course in September. The College has just re-located one of its training facilities to the former presbyterian church adjacent to the college on Ormonde Road. A building that is as historically significant as the college building itself, the picturesque, small scale, church was built in 1839t o designs prepared by Charles Anderson (1802-69) making a pleasant impression on the visual appeal of Ormonde Road and Patrick Street Lower.

Following a sustained period of disruption to facilitate construction work to the rear of the college, the beautiful and renowned garden that fronts Ormonde College is at an advanced stage of restoration. The garden, with an array of rare rose bushes, mountain ash and cherry blossoms is a noted jewel in the crown of the horticultural landscape of the city that has been enjoyed by scholars and the public alike for many years. Unfortunately it has been a sorry sight for the last year but new life is emerging in the garden as the city continues to enjoy the warmth of an early Summer sun. The college owes a depth of gratitude to long time staff member Mr. Canice Ryan for overseeing the restoration. A true labour of love.
